Crossed Double Dovetail / Hand Cut Joints / Unplugged Woodworking
A puzzle joint, the crossed double dovetail, cut by hand. See how the puzzle works, and one method of preparing it. Arguably the best method as it wastes far less wood than the common way.

Hello, thanx for your videos ! My dad wants to build one for me but does not have the necesary tools... Could I have the plans please ? Thank you very much
If you contact me through my website I'll send you the plans
Just what i needed, thank you😊
Do you know what these were painted in
It's an awful long time ago but I seem to recall linseed oil based paint. Only a day or so ago there was an interesting comment on one of the seven videos about how since the lead in linseed oil paints had been replaced with zinc that they were now more prone to mould, and there was a better option. Maybe worth you checking that out.
I'm not sure about linseed paints these days without the lead content which has been replaced with zinc as a mould algae protector its now very prone to mould growth and have stopped using it now the best option nowadays is owatrol oil then on with owatrol deco its the system that last without mould algae growth
Useful to know, thanks
Very helpful tutorial! On the last part with the jig to ride your plane on, maybe add a little fence on the 45 degree slope so that it is not a guess work wether the plane will cut into the jig or not
I sharpened my blade just as you did and get tracks with even more tearout somehow the blade seems to chatter
Chatter I find is normally down to a poor fitted frog or blade assembly, and could account for tearout. You might also try reducing the depth of cut. Ultimately some wood is so contrary that it will defy most attempts.
@@mitchwoodwork I have no Idea what happened sir I just resharpened my blade and made that back bevel a little bit smoother as well as adjusting my depth of cut it works like a charm on my beautiful interlocking grain walnut thank you sooooo much
@@mitchwoodwork liked and subscribed
@@mitchwoodwork I also forgot to set my chip breaker behind my bevel 😂 anyway very great explanation thank you very much mister.
this is gorgeous 😍
Fantastic! Thank you. Any comment on whether the Stanley 45 does a better job than the Veritas Skew Rabbet Plane or the Stanley 78?
I'd say the 45 isn't quite as good as the others, but very capable. Because the 45 was designed to do so many different functions, each one is slightly compromised.
Hello from Calit. I know it's been several years since you made your shoulder plane. Do you have a template for the body ? I just saw your video and love your work. Take care !
Thanks. If you contact me through my website mitchpeacock.co.uk I'll dig something out for you.
@mitchwoodwork thank you sir !
Great vid for this kind of board. Just curious if that v groove is cut to be the same depth as the gap between the edge of the plane sole and the blade or not.
Nice content. Good work.
You didn't mention in the video what the bed angle is. Looks like the standard 12°, is that so?
Indeed it is. Silly mistake of mine not to mention that.
Folks resist temptation and do not, I repeat do not “pick up” the back of the plane blade in order to put a small “microbevel” as he called it on your nice flat blade backside. It can be tempting but don’t do it you’ll regret it. If sharper is the drive to totally muck up your flat back of the blade then try this… as it sharpens reduce the pressure your using. Steady but progressively keep backing off on the force you use. Also steadily increase the frequency you flip sides until ultimately every single stroke you flip
Man go get some 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 grit sandpaper and toss that wood scrap in the trash. Strop with leather and if you wanna go crazy hone with sapphire stones
That is the oldest young man I’ve ever seen. Just funnin with ya governor.. Being fully transparent I must reveal that I was about to give you a hard time on what was likely just a mix-up of nomenclature in the video. Then…. you shut me up with two words.. counter clockwise are the words. I have a petty pet peeve with how Britts will pronounce, sometimes totally changing English words for various more modern terms. Maybe it’s no big deal and it’s me with the problem?(that’s for sure). Digression sequence stop initiated. Thank you for not saying “Anti-clockwise”
Hi Mitch, do you still use a Japanese plane at all or did it not have much traction with you?
I always thought a vise more useful than a vice.
That was beautiful to watch. I am hoping to give this a try. I am definitely an amateur, and i'm sure my first 5 will not be up to scratch, but this gives me hope that its possible.
043 For me, Nice looking and finished well.
This series is wonderful, thank you
The horizontal joint is too weak
Interesting build- but why are you paying for a kit? (Just looked- £66!) Brass 1" square tubing is available, and cost around £2-£3 for enough to make the hardware. Comes in mill, brush, or bright finish- I use mill and just run some emery cloth over it. Thumb wheels are readily available, or use a butterfly nut. Nylon washer- I use a U shaped piece of shim brass. The frame retains this, and it gives excellent protection to the wood.
Absolutely, but the kit was a gift from a generous viewer.
@@mitchwoodwork Nice gift!
I have a Record T5 plane with a side handle to use on the shooting board, much easier to hold
Nice! Extra mass and side handle make the t5 a decent choice
I struggle to find nice thick blades like you have there. The one I just got is cardboard thin
Don't take the diagrams as an indication of blade thickness, mine are very thin too. It's virtually impossible to see, at least at my age, the difference in the bevel angles made when sharpening.
@@mitchwoodwork thanks for the reply but I mean your saw blade, I can actually see the bevel after you filed. Mine is paper this so obtaining a bevel is haaard
@brimleyhillmassive okay, but don't worry so long as you file how I've shown the bevel, no matter how tiny, will still be there and cut the right way.
@@mitchwoodwork many thanks, you're a good one.
Could you please give the equation to find density of wood log(measurements in cm)
You need to weigh it in kg, and divide by its volume in m². If you're using cm² instead of m², times result by 10000. If you get a result less than 0.1 or greater than 10 then you've gone wrong somewhere.
I have a question - why do you have an angled cut on one end of the tenon?
In some cases one might want to transfer forces in a certain direction, for example down towards the ground. More particularly in time framing. Also, there is a compromise between the tenon size and the strength of the part with the mortise, and glue surface area. Generally the design I've shown works well.
@@mitchwoodwork Thanks for the response. WHat is time framing?
Oops, that was a predictive text mistake. I meant timber framing, as in buildings made from large timbers using unglued joints often secured with wooden pins
Thanks for this, ive got a walnut piano that needs a refinish so will be using your method thanks again
Do you putty the inside of the window panes? Or use caulk or something?
Yes the panes are bedded in linseed oil putty, then putty applied to the outside
Great series of videos!
Thanks for the demonstration. I need to give these a shot.👍👍
Most helpful video so far Thank you.
the guitar is distracting.
Having bought a new router to cut rebates for drawer bases. I’m new to using a router and I just could not get my head around cutting a 8 mm rebate with a 4.5 mm tongue. I couldn’t find much on you tube using the parallel fence. You video came up and there we go. I was on the right track as I had screwed some cut mdf onto the fence. The only thing I didn’t do was cut the gap in the middle so the cutter could get through 😂😂. Brilliant explanations of the cuts and great tips thank you. I will try to make your jig with Perspex as well. 👏👏👏
Thanks, it's great to hear I've been helpful
@@mitchwoodwork Yes you have it’s been doing my head in. Especially when you bring the original fence up the the cutter there’s a slight step up from the base. I was thinking that the fence shouldn’t go that close to the cutter but it has to or you would never be able to shave off in 3mm increments ( if I’m making sense 😀). I think you solved the puzzle 😂. Would you mind telling me the thickness of the Perspex or was it acrylic you used please 🙏
@winty2721 3mm perspex. I'd go thicker if it was on a bigger router, but for the little palm router I was using this is ideal I feel.
@@mitchwoodwork Appreciate the fast response I’m definitely going to make this 👍👍👍
Perfect timing. Just about to attempt this joint technique! Thank you for posting this video!
Nice job. Thank you.
Thank you.
In my experience, end grain butt joints are much stronger than edge grain…. Just my experience though!
Finally a video which also shows the back of the joint. 🙂Did you combined it with glue in the box? Thanks for sharing
Cheers. No glue for the joints in the box and it's held up great
How long did this job take?
I think about a day per window, something like that
Nice. Currently building one myself- unfortunately I read the Studley book first... Means it is taking a bit longer- the ebony and mother-of-pearl takes time. Holding your cabinet closed- why not make yourself catches and a centre lock/handle? I find commercial items never fit, and so I fabricate out of brass. See my scratch built machinist's toolbox for more on this.
We have it and can supply it. Can you please advise where we can supply it. Thanks
Greta would be proud!
Just picked up a #45. These videos are a huge help. Thank you for making them!
Well organized tutorial. Presentation style is much appreciated. No obnoxious bumper music. No wasted time.
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, brilliant. Thank you!
Nice video, simple and informative, and I like the music (which I don't usually). If welding the die together is not an available option, it could also be made by threading the pipe and plate and screwing them together.
Threading sounds a much better idea for me with my welding skills!
You went through all of that with a drill and a saw and files and you had a lathe the whole time? Why didn't you just make a ferrule that fit, on the lathe?
Thank you for sharing. This video was very helpful.
Pleasure. Cheers
I just got my ordered FROE and your video on how to use and care for the tool is a timely advice, blessings ❤
Enjoy using it
